Mark Barratt ACA profile picture

Mark Barratt ACA Partner

Mark looks after a client base of owner managed businesses with a turnover of up to £6 million. He also specialises in solicitors’ accounts and is a member of the ICAEW Solicitors Group. Mark also advises business start-ups where his experience, enthusiasm and contacts and knowledge regarding local grants and finance are of great value.

Mark has been in accountancy for some 25 years with 5 years in industry as a Financial Controller in the motor trade and 20 years in private practice, 15 of these as a Partner at Harris+Co.

Mark is a family man and an active member of the Catholic Church. His hobbies and interests outside of work include watching most sports particularly football, socialising, listening to music and karaoke.

Ian Bragger ACA Associate Partner

Ian is a Chartered Accountant and joined Harris+Co in 2005 after graduating from The University of Sheffield with a First Class Honours Degree. He works with owner managed businesses on accounts preparation, VAT and tax planning. He has also worked with start up businesses and has run courses locally, and prepared online webinars, to provide start up entrepreneurs with advice and guidance on business start up issues. Ian also carries out statutory audit work for medium sized clients with an annual turnover of £10m and above. He also has developed experience and knowledge of Academy Schools having managed a portfolio of Academy School clients since the sector began to grow in 2012.

Ian also helps in the local business community by volunteering in a number of roles. Since 2013 he has helped to run JCI Barnsley, a young professionals development organisation, which actively seeks to provide people in their 20s and 30s with extra skills to be used in the workplace. As a JCI member graduate, he has won local and national awards. In early 2016 he became the JCI Barnsley representative on the Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce Representation Council, which is the main policy discussion and decision making body for the Chamber and consists of representatives from member businesses.

Ian Garner FCA CTA Partner

Ian, who was born in Barnsley and has lived in the town most of his life , has been a partner in the firm since 1989 having joined Harris+Co after specialising in personal and capital taxation with a Big 4 firm. He heads up the firm’s taxation offering and is very proud of the fact that together with himself there are 5 other Chartered Tax Advisers in the firm making it the strongest representation of that professional body in the local area. As well as taxation he also provides accounting and general business advice to many of the firm’s owner-managed business clients. Although his wife Andrea has been heard to describe taxation as Ian’s hobby, he is also a keen golfer and Secretary to the oldest Friendly Society in the country.

Nichola Hawden ACA CTA Associate Partner

Nichola began her career at Harris+Co after graduating from Lancaster University in 2005; she qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2008 and a Chartered Tax Adviser in 2009. Nichola is a general practitioner with a specialism in tax and has a wide range of experience working with both personal and corporate tax clients helping them to reduce their tax burden and also navigate the complex requirements of HMRC. Nichola enjoys a challenge and can often be found with her head in a book trying to solve a tax problem or defend a client against an enquiry.

Nichola also manages the practice’s Healthcare Services, providing advice to a portfolio of GP and other medical professionals on their accounts, tax and pensions. In addition Nichola has designed and is delivering the practice’s Auto Enrolment services helping clients to navigate the complex regulations enabling them to concentrate on running their business.

Nichola is also passionate about supporting women in business and together with White Apple Thinking Limited has successfully launched Connect +, a series of informal networking events to enable business and professional women in Barnsley and the surrounding areas to come together to develop relationships in a supportive environment.

Outside of work Nichola enjoys spending time with her husband, young son and family of four dogs. She enjoys long walks in the countryside and discovering the wonderful sights and sounds her beloved Barnsley and Yorkshire have to offer. She also enjoys training her dogs and is currently training her border collie Twix to help with household chores including fetching keys, shopping, and answering the telephone!

Paul Hinchliffe FCA CTA Partner

Paul is a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Adviser and leads the firm's audit and assurance services for larger owner-managed businesses across a wide range of industry sectors, including not-for-profit organisations and charities. Paul also leads Harris+Co's assurance services to academy schools in Yorkshire and advises on academies’ financial reporting, regulatory and governance responsibilities both during and after conversion. Paul is also the firm’s partner with responsibility for training and people development.

Before joining Harris+Co in 2004, Paul enjoyed a 20 year career with a world-leading Big 4 professional services firm and offers pragmatic, clear advice to organisations in an energetic, friendly and approachable manner. Outside work Paul uses these skills in a number of varying roles, including Chair of Governors at a Barnsley primary school, Chair of the Governance Development group in the local pyramid of 11 schools, Junior Athletics Coach, and not least, as a parent.Paul has also served as a Charity Trustee and Treasurer to a local children’s charity and two churches. Despite his ageing legs, in what little spare time remains, Paul is still a keen runner and completed the 2014 and 2015 Brathay Windermere marathon in his favourite place in the UK - the Lake District.

Steve Watson FCCA CTA Partner

Steve joined Harris+Co in 1995 as a trainee accountant after completing his A levels at Barnsley College. He went on to qualify as a Chartered Certified Accountant and then later as a Chartered Tax Adviser. Steve is a general practitioner who specialises in dealing with owner-managed businesses and helping them achieve their business goals with timely, effective advice and whose approach is always open and relaxed. In addition to business advice, Steve is passionate about reducing the tax burden on clients and advises on ways that this can be mitigated.

Outside office hours Steve loves to spend time with his family and enjoys watching most sports, particularly Rugby. Steve is also keen on personal development and can be found attending a range of courses, golf club in hand!

Tom Wotton ACA CTA Associate Partner

Tom joined Harris+Co in August 2007 and is responsible for looking after the needs of a diverse portfolio of individuals and owner-managed businesses ranging from start-ups requiring clear and concise advice to help negotiate the ever-increasing administrative "red tape", right through to multi-million pound turnover enterprises and the variety of challenges that they face.

As both a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Adviser, Tom enjoys proactively seeking opportunities to take advantage of HMRC approved reliefs and to advise clients on how best to structure their affairs to help reduce the tax burden on them and their businesses. Aside from his interest in tax, Tom’s other principal specialism is the academy school sector. Tom takes great pride in guiding schools through the often complex conversion issues and supporting them through the first year and beyond.

Away from the office, Tom is a keen hill-walker, runner and watcher of most sports. Possibly to the annoyance of his neighbours, Tom enjoys playing the French Horn, and, as a result of his French and Spanish degree from the University of Sheffield, also likes inflicting his language skills on unsuspecting locals when on holiday!

Kevin Shaw Partner

Having worked in the profession for over 40 years, Kevin has built up a wealth of experience in general practice. He has a broad knowledge of taxation (personal, corporate and VAT) and can advise on PAYE/CIS matters.

Kevin prides himself on providing support to small/medium sized businesses, helping them grow into well-established managed enterprises. Kevin likes nothing better than working closely with budding entrepreneurs providing advice on business structures, dealing with VAT/HMRC registration, helping them on their way to turning their dream into reality.

Lindsey Birley

Lindsey qualified as a Chartered Certified Accountant in 2007 and joined Harris+Co in 2015 after 10 years in practice in Rotherham. She deals with a wide range of clients, from sole traders to limited company audits, and has a particular interest in academy schools and solicitors' accounts.

Lindsey lives in Silkstone with her husband Mark and daughters Niamh and Ruby. Outside of work, Lindsey enjoys baking and spending time with her family.

Rachel Bould

After graduating from Nottingham Trent University, Rachel worked for a small number of other accountancy firms before settling at Harris+Co in 2006. Since then Rachel has become a true general practice all-rounder and primarily works with owner-managed business, especially start-ups that often need that little extra assistance with compliance matters. No question is ever too small or silly and she is always happy to assist.

Outside of Harris+Co Rachel enjoys brainteasers and baking whilst being the proud mother of two beautiful daughters.

James Burland

James has been with the practice since 1996, starting as a trainee and later qualifying as an ACCA member in 2003 before becoming a fellow member in 2008. James has gained a wide variety of experience in accounts, bookkeeping, VAT, payroll, management accounts and company/personal taxation over the years and is also involved in specialist reporting areas such as Solicitors’ Accounts Rules, FCA Gabriel reporting and Auto Enrolment. Due to the wide variety of work to which he has been exposed, James has experience with multiple computerised systems including most Sage products (Accounts, Payroll and Budgeting), Quickbooks, Xero, Pegasus and Iris, together with a host of other smaller, bespoke systems.

In his spare time James is a family man that enjoys supporting his young family.

Tim Calladine

Tim started work at Harris+Co back in 2004. Since then he has qualified with the Association of Accounting Technicians and is now working towards his Association of Taxation Technicians qualification. His role in the tax team involves the preparation of tax returns for a very wide and diverse list of clients. He is also responsible for troubleshooting a wide variety of computer problems within the practice.

Outside work Tim is a very keen swimmer and is an active member of the Masters Swim Squad for the Borough of Kirklees.

Chris Cartwright

Chris joined the practice in 1980 having graduated from Leicester University. Since then he has gained a wealth of experience of accounts preparation for all types of organisation whilst also developing long-standing client relationships.

Chris also undertakes a variety of other work, including VAT and Self Assessment tax return preparation and business forecasting.

Outside of work Chris is a Barnsley FC season ticket holder, plays football and badminton and enjoys watching most sports, music, reading and visiting heritage sites.

Tori Hutton

Tori joined the practice back in April 2013 as an apprentice studying towards her AAT qualification, and is hoping to commence her ACA studies during 2016. Tori has experience in preparing accounts, principally for limited companies and sole traders, calculating VAT, CIS returns and company tax returns and is also a key member of the Academies and Audit team.

Outside of work Tori enjoys spending time with her family, walking her dog, shopping and socialising.

Elspeth Fielding

Elspeth joined Harris+Co in 2010 as a trainee, gaining her AAT qualification in 2013 and qualified as a chartered accountant in December 2015. During this time she has gained a range of experience working on limited company and sole trader accounts, audits, academy audits, VAT returns and CIS returns.

In her spare time Elspeth enjoys watching films, reading, baking and spending time with her family and friends.

Tracey Hale

Tracey joined the practice in July 2015 having gained 10 years’ experience at two other local accountancy practices where she gained a significant exposure to preparing accounts and tax returns, principally dealing with Limited Companies, Partnerships, and Sole Traders, with complete and incomplete accounting records.

Outside the office Tracey enjoys baking, watching films, walking with her dog and art and crafts.

Hannah McFadden

Hannah joined Harris and Co in September 2016 as a trainee and is currently working towards finishing her level 3 AAT studies. She is hoping to progress further on to level 4 in September 2017. Hannah’s main tasks at work are, preparing accounts for limited companies, VAT returns and assisting in payroll services.

Bethany Morgan McKenzie

Beth joined the practice as an apprentice in 2016 after completing a level 3 AAT Diploma at Barnsley College. Beth is currently working towards her AAT Level 4 Professional Diploma with the hopes of moving on to ACA or ACCA.

Since joining the practice Beth has been able to gain experience in completing year end accounts for limited companies, completing VAT returns and doing some basic payroll.

Beth tends to spend her free time either reading books, sketching or watching films.

Leanne Revill

Leanne joined Harris+Co in mid 2016 with a background in both Employee & Practice/Bureau Payroll and HR. Providing end to end processing of payroll, year end processing and dealing with CIS and Auto Enrolment, Leanne will be studying a professional qualification to reinforce her skills in these areas.

In her spare time, she enjoys producing artwork, listening to music, visiting the cinema and watching live sports as well as being a Sheffield Wednesday season ticket holder.

Andrew Shone

Andrew joined Harris+Co in August 2000 and quickly established himself as an Audit Senior within the practice. Having now progressed and developed into a key Audit Manager in the firm, Andrew specialises in looking after Harris+Co’s audit clients and larger family/owner managed businesses.

Having over 20 years experience in practice, Andrew’s key strengths include developing close working relationships with clients, ensuring that our reputation for excellent service is maintained throughout South and West Yorkshire and beyond.

Outside of the office, Andrew is a junior football fanatic, coaching and managing Barnsley Schools Football teams as well as his own Junior Sunday League team, giving back to the community and providing our future accountants and auditors with structured sporting opportunities.

Julie Stather

Julie joined Harris+Co in 1989, initially on a full-time basis, before going part-time to bring up her children.

Julie specialises in preparing accounts from manual cashbooks and incomplete records for sole traders, partnerships and limited companies.

Outside of work Julie enjoys spending time with her children, supporting her teenage son with his education and his hobby of swimming, and her young daughter with nursery, swimming and general activities.

Julie also volunteers as a Girls’ Brigade leader and Sunday school teacher working with local young people.

Jon Taylor

Jon joined the practice in August 2015 having spent his professional career in and around Sheffield and Yorkshire.

He has a passion for helping businesses become more efficient with their financial responsibilities, together with providing ideas extending beyond accountancy and taxation to keep businesses competitive.

In recent years, Jon has developed a strong understanding of modern client needs and paired these with the possibilities of everything digital. He often recommends and implements cloud based solutions to help businesses keep focused on their performance, up to date with their deadlines, as well as the cost benefits this new way of working brings.

Neil Thorpe

Neil joined the practice in 1986, bringing with him a number of clients from the West Yorkshire area.

Neil has gained a wide range of experience in preparing accounts, mainly dealing with Limited Companies, Partnerships, and Sole Traders, with complete and incomplete accounting records.

As well as the above, Neil is also involved in the preparation of accounts for other organisations including Pension Schemes, Charities and Trusts.

Outside of the office Neil enjoys Football, Reading, Roman History, Skiing, Socialising and spending quality time with his two sons.

Alex Tyas

Alex joined the practice in 2014, straight after finishing his A-levels. Alex is currently working towards his AAT qualification and hopes to move on to the ACCA qualification in due course. The main tasks Alex undertakes are preparing accounts for limited companies and VAT returns.

Outside of work Alex likes to socialise with his friends and family, going to see the latest films at the cinema and watching Formula 1 racing.

Lee Venson

Lee joined Harris+Co directly from sixth form college as an office junior and qualified as a Certified Chartered Accountant in 1995. With over 25 years' experience in all aspects of accountancy services, Lee has numerous long standing client relationships with Harris+Co's many family/owned-managed businesses.

Lee's primary role is dealing with incorporated entities ensuring all relevant reporting requirements are fulfilled and to provide pro-active advice to clients. Lee’s other specialisms include IT and computer-based accounting systems and he has implemented numerous systems and provided training for a wide range of clients.

Outside the office, Lee is married with two daughters, plays five-a-side football and enjoys being an active volunteer of the local Gymnastic club that both his daughters attend.

Kerry Wagstaff

Kerry Wagstaff joined Harris+Co after completing her A levels at Barnsley College and has been with the firm for over 15 years, gaining her AAT qualification here.

Her current position is primarily that of payroll manager and Kerry has gained significant experience in dealing with HMRC on various PAYE issues and, more recently, with Auto Enrolment, which is starting to have a significant impact on the firm’s core SME client base.

Kerry still has a hand in preparing VAT returns and management accounts for a number of clients and she is also one of the first aid officers at Harris+Co.

Outside of work Kerry enjoys her holidays, going to the cinema and walking.

Sandra Watson

Sandra has been with the practice since 2005, starting as a trainee and later qualifying as an ACA member in 2008 and a Chartered Tax Adviser in 2010. Over the years Sandra has gained a wide variety of experience in accounts preparation, auditing, vat returns, Company and personal Tax Returns. Her current role in the tax team involves providing taxation advice and the preparation of tax returns for a very wide and diverse list of clients.

In her spare time Sandra enjoys spending time with her young family.

Nigel Wilkinson

Nigel began working with the practice in 2013 and took over sole responsibility for Practice Management matters on the retirement of Robert Cave in March 2014.

Nigel is a self employed Chartered Accountant, who was previously in practice in Barnsley and Wakefield. He also works with other businesses in South and West Yorkshire as well as marking professional exams.

Outside of work Nigel plays tennis, snooker and racquetball and, along with his daughter, is a keen skier.

Andrew Wood

Andrew joined Harris+Co in the autumn of 2014 as a trainee accountant, having previously graduated from Nottingham Trent University. Since this time he has gained experience in the preparation of company accounts and audit field work, and most recently has begun working in our tax department.

Andrew is a very keen sportsman and currently plays cricket for his local club Darton, as well as being a member of Barnsley Tennis Club. He also enjoys reading and playing the guitar.
